Canadian gymnast Félix Dolci wins Commonwealth Games silver medal in all-around final
Canadian Men’s Team Claims Gold
The Canadian men’s artistic gymnastics team earned a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The team achieved a score of 241.400 points, placing ahead of England and Australia. This marks a significant achievement for Canada in the competition.
The team’s performance included scores of 41.950 on vault, 40.600 on rings, 40.350 on parallel bars, 39.650 on pommel horse, 39.550 on floor exercise, and 39.300 on horizontal bar. Paris 2024 Olympian Félix Dolci, from Laval, Quebec, led the individual standings with 81.650 points. The gold medal-winning team also included William Émard, Ethan Ikeda, Jordan Carroll, and René Cournoyer.
The Commonwealth Games, which run through August 2, feature 3,000 athletes from 74 countries and territories. This year’s event was held in Glasgow after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host. The competition includes ten sports, with six sports incorporating their Para sport counterparts.
Additional Canadian Medalists
Beyond the men’s gymnastics gold, Canada has secured other medals at the Commonwealth Games. Mary Jibb of Muskoka, Ontario, finished third in the women’s 200-metre individual medley SM10. Following her performance, Jack Gill of Brockville, Ontario, added a bronze medal in the men’s 100-metre butterfly S10 final.
Jibb expressed her excitement about the bronze medal, noting it was her fastest time since an event in Singapore last year. Gill, competing in his first Commonwealth Games, shared his happiness about medaling with his parents present. He also highlighted the positive environment of being with the Olympic side of the Canadian program.
In other events, Oliver Dawson from Grand Prairie, Alberta, finished fourth in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke final. Ella Jansen of Burlington, Ontario, placed eighth in the women’s 200-metre freestyle test. Paralympian Emma Van Dyk was seventh in the 200M S14 freestyle event.
Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team Earns Silver
The Canadian women’s artistic gymnastics team also achieved a podium finish, securing a silver medal with a score of 157.300. The team demonstrated strong performances across all four apparatus. The silver-medal team members are Ellie Black, Gabrielle Black, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Redick, and Alyssa Guerrier-Calixte.
Individually, Fontaine led Canada on vault, while Ellie Black delivered a notable balance beam routine. Redick performed dynamically on the floor exercise, and Guerrier-Calixte contributed a vault score. Gabrielle Black also made a valuable contribution to the team’s performance.
Ellie Black and Fontaine both advanced to the women’s all-around final. Ellie Black qualified first overall with a score of 53.400, and Fontaine secured her place in the final in fifth with 52.050. Ellie Black mentioned her excitement to be back competing all-around and with the team at the Commonwealth Games.
Fontaine topped the vault standings with a score of 13.750. Ellie Black advanced to the uneven bars final in second place with 13.850. Both Ellie Black and Fontaine will also represent Canada in the balance beam final after qualifying fifth and sixth, respectively, with scores of 12.900 and 12.850. Redick was named second reserve on uneven bars with a score of 12.650.
Canada’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball teams also started strong, with the women’s team defeating South Africa 19-3 and the men’s team winning against Kenya 16-3. Both Canadian squads are scheduled to face their English counterparts on Sunday.
Overall, Canada has won four medals in the first two days of the Commonwealth Games, including one gold and one silver.
The Commonwealth Games will conclude on August 2.
