CFL Week 7 Honours for Montreal and Calgary Players

Montreal Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander, along with running back Travis Theis, and Calgary Stampeders running back Dedrick Mills, have been recognized as the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) top players for Week 7. These selections highlight their strong performances during the recent games.

The players were chosen by a panel comprising representatives from the CFL’s Football Operations, Player and Game Statistics, and Content departments. This panel evaluates exceptional statistical performances, pivotal plays, and game-breaking feats to determine the weekly honourees.

Alexander’s Record-Breaking Performance

Davis Alexander, the quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes, earned his third Player of the Week honour this season, having previously been recognized in Week 2 and Week 4. In the Alouettes’ 38-32 victory over the Stampeders in Calgary, Alexander delivered a notable performance. He completed 25 of 32 passes, achieving a 78.1 per cent completion rate.

Alexander threw for 402 passing yards, marking his second game of the season with over 400 yards. He also matched a career-high with three touchdown passes, including a 27-yard effort to Kaseem Ferdinand that secured the lead late in the fourth quarter. A significant achievement for Alexander was breaking the CFL record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception, reaching 336 attempts. He also recorded four completions of 30 yards or more and maintained an efficiency rating of 150.8.

Theis and Mills Stand Out in Rushing

Travis Theis, the Alouettes’ running back, also received Player of the Week recognition for his contributions in the game against the Stampeders. Theis rushed for 123 yards on 19 carries, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. This marked his first career game with over 100 rushing yards. He also had five rushes of 10 yards or more and scored a 16-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, making it his fourth consecutive game with a major score. Additionally, Theis contributed in the receiving game with five receptions on six targets for 49 yards, including three second-down conversions, accumulating 172 yards from scrimmage.

On the opposing side, Dedrick Mills, running back for the Calgary Stampeders, was also named a Player of the Week for his Week 7 performance. In the home game against the Montreal Alouettes, Mills carried the ball 15 times for 130 yards, averaging 8.7 yards per carry. This was his third game of the season with over 100 rushing yards. He scored one rushing touchdown to open the second-half scoring and added three receptions for 38 yards. One of his receptions resulted in a 15-yard receiving touchdown, which set up a game-tying convert late in the fourth quarter. This marked his first game of the season with multiple majors, and he accumulated 168 yards from scrimmage.

Mills’ performance was particularly impactful in the second half, where he gained 117 of his 168 scrimmage yards as the Stampeders rallied from a 22-3 halftime deficit to tie the score. However, their potential game-winning drive fell short in the final minute. Through six games, Mills leads all running backs across the league in carries with 85 and yards with 524. He has also recorded two scores on the ground and the first two receiving touchdowns of his career since his debut in 2022.
