What Happened
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil brand infant formula sold at Costco due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin, which can lead to food poisoning. The affected product is packaged in one-kilogram containers labeled “with whole milk.” The recall was initiated following reports of similar issues in another country.
Why It Matters
Cereulide toxin is particularly concerning as it is not destroyed by heat and can survive temperatures that would typically eliminate harmful bacteria. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, the CFIA is taking precautionary measures to ensure consumer safety. Recent recalls by Nestlé and Danone for similar contamination further underscore the importance of vigilance regarding baby formula safety.
What’s Next
Kendal Nutricare, the European-based company behind Kendamil, stated that the toxin has been linked to a different oil supply used during a short supply disruption, affecting two specific batches produced in May 2025. Consumers are advised to check the product codes 897274 and 888632 located on the base of the tin and to return any affected products to the point of purchase.
