In a heartbreaking case from Milton, Ontario, Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney have been found guilty of first-degree murder. The couple was convicted for the death of 12-year-old L.L., whom they had been trying to adopt, along with the torture of his younger brother, J.L.
L.L. was discovered dead in the basement of Hamber and Cooney’s home on December 21, 2022. The trial began in mid-September 2023 and revealed disturbing details about the couple’s treatment of the boys.
Justice Clayton Conlan stated that the couple unlawfully confined J.L. and failed to provide him with the necessities of life. This ruling has raised serious questions regarding systemic failures within Ontario’s child protection services.
The judge’s decision spanned 300 pages, encompassing testimonies from dozens of witnesses. Despite their conviction, both Hamber and Cooney pleaded not guilty to all charges, which included first-degree murder, confinement, and assault with a weapon.
Crown attorney Monica MacKenzie remarked on the tragedy, saying, “This was an exceptionally tragic case with a profound impact on many people. A child’s life was taken and another child suffered significant abuse over a number of years.” Her words resonate deeply in a community still grappling with this loss.
L.L.’s biological mother expressed her pain: “I want people to understand that we are not just a case or a story. We are real people, a family who has lived through heartbreak.” Her plea highlights the human cost behind these legal proceedings.
As the legal process continues, a sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date, where both Hamber and Cooney face up to 25 years to life in prison without parole for their heinous acts.
