As anticipation builds in Bergamo, Italy prepares to host a significant World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland on March 26, 2026. The match will take place at the New Balance Arena, a venue chosen specifically for its ability to create an intimate atmosphere compared to larger stadiums like San Siro.
Gennaro Gattuso, the head coach, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to select the venue, stating, “I chose the stadium. I want to thank the President and Buffon for letting me decide.” This decision reflects a desire to foster a closer connection between the team and its supporters.
The New Balance Arena, with a capacity of 25,000, has only hosted one match for Italy since 2022, making this upcoming event particularly special for local fans. It highlights Bergamo’s role in the broader context of Italian football, as noted by Daniele Verri, who remarked, “Bergamo and Atalanta are a good example for European football. It’s a nice venue and it’s an important venue for Italian football.”
In addition to the football excitement, Bergamo is also seeing significant improvements in its transportation infrastructure. The T2 tram line, which will connect the city to Villa d’Almè, is expected to begin commercial service within the year. Spanning approximately 20 km, the line will feature new trams built by Skoda, each with a maximum capacity of 281 passengers.
The journey from Bergamo to Villa d’Almè will take about 30 minutes, with 150 journeys planned daily. Once fully operational, the T2 line is projected to carry over 4 million passengers annually, enhancing accessibility for both residents and visitors.
Seven park-and-ride facilities will also be constructed along the T2 line route, further supporting the community’s transportation needs. Filippo Simonetti noted the significance of this project, stating, “The supply of the new trams, the result of a European tender, confirms the international scope of the TEB project.”
As the date of the World Cup play-off approaches, the excitement in Bergamo is palpable. This event not only represents a crucial moment for Italian football but also serves to strengthen community ties and showcase the city’s capabilities as a host for international events.
With the combination of a thrilling match and improved transportation, Bergamo is poised to shine on the world stage. The community is rallying together, eager to support their team and celebrate their city’s achievements.
