Bosnia-Herzegovina secures victory in Seattle

Bosnia-Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1 in their final Group B fixture, improving their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. The match, held in Seattle, saw temperatures reach 29C. This victory marks only Bosnia’s second win in a World Cup, with their first being a 3-1 triumph against Iran in 2014.

The Bosnian side finished the group stage with four points, level with co-hosts Canada. However, they placed third in the group due to goal difference, missing out on automatic qualification for the last 32. Despite this, Bosnia-Herzegovina could still progress as one of the best eight third-placed teams in the tournament, though they must await the outcomes of other matches to confirm their fate. Qatar finished at the bottom of the group with one point.

The match began with early pressure from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Within three minutes, Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Sunjic tested Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada with shots from a distance. The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute by 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, who moved past two Qatari defenders before scoring with a right-footed strike.

Bosnia’s captain, 40-year-old Edin Dzeko, played a significant role in their second goal just six minutes later. Dzeko, making his 150th appearance for his country and holding the record for most goals and appearances for Bosnia, saw his volleyed effort deflect off defender Sultan Al Brake and into the net, resulting in an own goal credited to Abunada. Dzeko nearly extended the lead further, hitting the post with a low drive shortly after.

Qatar’s efforts and Bosnia’s defence

Qatar had opportunities to score, with captain Hassan Al-Haydos reducing the deficit three minutes before halftime by converting a cross from Edmilson Jr. The Asian champions ended the first half strongly, as Pedro Miguel also struck the post after receiving a pass from Akram Afif. Afif also brushed the side-netting early in the second half, as Qatar posed a threat on counter-attacks.

Despite sending on prolific scorer Almoez Ali for the final 20 minutes, Qatar’s attack lacked a decisive edge. Bosnia-Herzegovina maintained a solid defence throughout the match. The victory was sealed in the 80th minute when substitute Ermin Mahmic scored for the second consecutive game, slotting the ball past Abunada after latching onto a loose ball following a scramble in the Qatar box.

Looking ahead for Bosnia-Herzegovina

Before the match, both teams were looking to bounce back from heavy losses in their previous games; Qatar suffered a 6-0 defeat to Canada, while Bosnia-Herzegovina lost 4-1 to Switzerland. This was the first competitive match between the two nations, who had previously met twice in friendly matches, with Qatar winning one and drawing one.

Manager Sergej Barbarez had expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the crucial match, stating, “I told the players they have one hour to cheer up and lift their heads. Life goes on. We have another match ahead of us and, trust me, they will be ready.” The four-point tally achieved by Bosnia-Herzegovina is historically often sufficient for a third-place team to advance, but their progression depends on the results of other upcoming matches.
