Brazil survive World Cup scare against Japan to advance

Brazil triumphs over Japan with a 2-1 victory in the World Cup Round of 32 in Houston, securing their advancement thanks to a late goal from Gabriel Martinelli.

Brazil advances in World Cup Round of 32

Brazil, a five-time champion, secured a 2-1 victory over Japan in the World Cup Round of 32 match held in Houston. The winning goal came late in injury time from substitute Gabriel Martinelli, ensuring Brazil‘s progression in the tournament.

Martinelli entered the game in the second half and scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time, preventing the match from going into extra time. This crucial goal followed an earlier equalizer from Casemiro in the 56th minute. Casemiro‘s header, assisted by Gabriel Magalhães, found the net after a previous attempt two minutes prior.

Japan initially took the lead in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano capitalized on a misplaced pass at midfield, driving down the field before scoring with a right-footed shot. Brazil had opportunities to level the score earlier in the second half, with Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki making several key saves, including blocking a header from Bruno Guimarães in the 52nd minute.

Vinícius Júnior, who has scored four goals in the current tournament, had a chance to put Brazil ahead in the 58th minute, but his shot was deflected by Suzuki and hit the far post. Suzuki concluded the match with four saves.

Towards the end of the match, Casemiro left the field in the first minute of second-half stoppage time due to what appeared to be a leg injury.

Neymar’s role in the squad

Star player Neymar Jr. was included in Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti‘s 26-player World Cup roster, a selection that came as a surprise given his recent recovery from meniscus surgery and an ongoing calf injury. This injury caused him to miss Brazil‘s first two group stage matches.

Neymar did appear as a substitute in Brazil‘s final group stage victory against Scotland, playing for 14 minutes. However, he was largely ineffective during that appearance, reportedly looking sluggish and not at full fitness. For the Round of 32 match against Japan, Neymar once again started from the bench.

Matheus Cunha, who scored in the match against Scotland, started at striker for Brazil against Japan. While Neymar was available as a substitute, it was uncertain whether Ancelotti would utilize the veteran player during the game.

This victory marks Brazil‘s 12th win against Japan. The teams have also played to two draws, with Japan‘s sole win against Brazil occurring in a friendly match in Tokyo in October. The only prior World Cup meeting between the two nations saw Brazil defeat Japan 4-1. Japan has never won a knockout match at the World Cup.

Tournament progression and historical context

Brazil secured its spot in the knockout stage by winning Group C, following a draw with Morocco and victories over Haiti and Scotland. Japan advanced to the Round of 32 as the runner-up in Group F, after drawing with the Netherlands and Sweden, and achieving a win against Tunisia. The loss to Brazil ended Japan‘s 10-game unbeaten streak, which began after a 2-0 loss to the United States in September.

The win for Brazil on Monday coincided with the anniversary of their first World Cup championship in Sweden in 1958. In that final, a 17-year-old Pele scored two goals against the host country. Brazil is home to approximately 2.7 million people of Japanese descent, representing the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, highlighting the deep cultural ties between the two nations.

These connections extend into soccer, notably with Brazil superstar Zico, who moved to Japan in 1991 to play for Kashima Antlers and contributed to the development of Japan‘s professional soccer league. He later coached the Japan national team from 2002 to 2006, leading them to the World Cup in 2006. Brazil is scheduled to face either the Ivory Coast or Norway in the Round of 16 on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
