What Happened
On February 16, East Hill Elementary School in RDP welcomed back former student Joe Veleno, a member of the Canadiens de Montréal hockey team, during School Perseverance Week. Veleno, who attended the school from Kindergarten to Grade 6, was greeted with enthusiastic cheers at a full assembly. He accepted an offer to become a special ambassador for EMSB Nutrition Month in March.
Why It Matters
Veleno’s visit serves as an inspiration for students, highlighting the importance of perseverance and education. As a notable athlete who was drafted 30th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, Veleno’s journey from a local school to professional hockey exemplifies the potential for success that can arise from dedication and hard work. His reconnection with former classmates and teachers further emphasizes the impact of community and mentorship in shaping young lives.
What’s Next
Looking ahead, Veleno will take on the role of ambassador for EMSB Nutrition Month, promoting healthy eating habits among students. Meanwhile, the Canadiens de Montréal continue their season, with players like Oliver Kapanen returning to practice after competing in the Milano Cortina 2026, where he won a bronze medal with Finland.
