Christine Fréchette has emerged victorious in the CAQ leadership race, securing 58% of the vote, making her the second woman to lead Quebec.

In a significant development for Quebec’s political landscape, Christine Fréchette has been elected as the new leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) on April 12, 2026, winning 58% of the vote. This victory marks a historic moment as she becomes the second woman to serve as premier of Quebec, following in the footsteps of Pauline Marois.

Fréchette’s leadership campaign resonated with many, focusing on pressing economic issues and a commitment to limiting immigration. Her election comes at a time when the CAQ is preparing for the upcoming provincial election scheduled for October 5, 2026. Over 20,500 CAQ members were eligible to vote, with an impressive 77% participating in the leadership race, reflecting the party’s active engagement.

Born in Trois-Rivières, Fréchette has been a member of the National Assembly for Sanguinet since 2022 and previously held key positions as Quebec’s immigration minister and minister of economy, innovation, and energy. Her experience and dedication to public service have garnered her significant support, including endorsements from 16 ministers within François Legault’s cabinet.

The announcement of her victory took place during a gathering in Drummondville, where supporters celebrated her achievement. “It’s spring. Spring is a time of renewal,” Fréchette remarked, highlighting her vision for the future of Quebec.

François Legault, who announced his intention to step down as CAQ leader in January 2026 due to declining poll numbers, acknowledged the challenges ahead for Fréchette. “A leadership race creates tensions, it’s normal,” he stated, emphasizing the need for unity as the party moves forward.

Political analysts are closely watching Fréchette’s next steps. Professor Daniel Béland noted, “The challenge the new CAQ leader is facing is really tremendous because of the position of the party in the polls.” Meanwhile, Daniel Tran, a political commentator, praised Fréchette’s ability to mobilize support, stating, “She’s shown throughout her campaign that she’s somebody who can mobilize a lot of people.”

As Fréchette prepares to select her cabinet and return to the National Assembly on May 5, the community remains hopeful for a renewed focus on economic growth and stability in Quebec. Her leadership is seen as a pivotal moment for the CAQ, and many are eager to see how she will navigate the challenges ahead.
