Significant Allegations Against Cardinal Ouellet
The defamation trial involving Cardinal Marc Ouellet has brought to light serious allegations of inappropriate touching made by Paméla Groleau. Groleau claims that the first incident took place in late 2008 when Ouellet allegedly massaged her shoulders for three to five minutes. She described feeling uncomfortable, stating, “It was as if I had a spotlight on me that brought him over to me right away to greet me, kiss me, touch my back.” During another event, she alleges that Ouellet held her hands and whispered into her ear to ask her name.
The final alleged incident occurred in 2010, when Groleau claims Ouellet slid his hand down her back to the top of her buttocks. Groleau testified that she felt “tracked” by Ouellet at various events they both attended, further emphasizing the discomfort she experienced.
In response to these allegations, Ouellet has filed a $100,000 defamation countersuit against Groleau, asserting that her claims have damaged his reputation. He has denied any wrongdoing, arguing that Groleau’s allegations unfairly associate him with more serious accusations.
The allegations against Ouellet first surfaced in 2022 as part of a broader class-action lawsuit against the archdiocese of Quebec. This context adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings.
Justice Martin Castonguay, overseeing the trial, clarified, “I am doing a defamation trial, and not the class action,” highlighting the distinct nature of the current legal battle.
Groleau’s testimony included emotional statements, such as, “I could feel the pressure of his hand,” and, “I felt like I lost everything,” reflecting the personal impact of the alleged incidents.
