How has Chris Bassitt transformed the Baltimore Orioles’ pitching staff this season? After a challenging start, his leadership and recent performance have sparked a significant turnaround.
This season, Bassitt signed with the Orioles for a one-year deal worth $18.5 million after three successful years with the Toronto Blue Jays. Initially, his performance was rocky—he allowed 17 runs (16 earned) in just 21.2 innings across his first five starts. The team’s pitching staff struggled as well, ranking 22nd in MLB with a 4.39 ERA and 24th with a 1.44 WHIP.
However, Bassitt took charge by having a “hard talk” with his teammates about their approach on the mound. He urged them to stop being “too cute” with their pitches and to adopt a more aggressive strategy. “We all were being ‘too cute’ and weren’t on the attack,” he explained.
This shift in mindset seems to have paid off. In his latest outing against the Houston Astros, Bassitt pitched an impressive 6.2 innings, allowing just one run while striking out seven—marking it as his best performance of the season so far.
Currently, Bassitt holds an ERA of 5.46 and a WHIP of 1.86 across six starts this year. His turnaround could be pivotal for the Orioles as they aim for success in the competitive AL East.
As the season progresses, fans will be watching closely to see if this newfound energy can propel the Orioles toward their goal of reaching the World Series.
