Collin Morikawa Withdraws from Players Championship
“I felt fine in warm-up. Like no signs of back problems. And teed it up on 11, and took one practice swing, and I just knew it was gone,” said Collin Morikawa following his withdrawal from the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Morikawa, who entered the tournament as the FedEx Cup leader, was seen stretching in pain on the 11th hole before deciding to pull out of the event. This incident marks a significant moment in his career, as it comes after a strong performance in recent tournaments.
This was Morikawa’s sixth appearance at The Players Championship. He had previously shown impressive form, including a fifth-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational just a week prior and three top-10 finishes this season.
Before his withdrawal, Morikawa had maintained an impressive streak of 13 consecutive rounds under par. His recent victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month further solidified his status as a top competitor in the sport.
“It’s just frustrating, because I don’t know what caused it,” Morikawa expressed, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding his injury. The 29-year-old golfer has had some lingering back issues in the past, notably during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and again in 2023.
Morikawa’s withdrawal after just one hole played in the opening round raises concerns about his health and future participation in upcoming events. “Trust me, I would play if I could. It’s just the worst thing in the world,” he added, reflecting on the disappointment of having to step back from competition.
As the golf community awaits further updates on Morikawa’s condition, fans and analysts alike are hopeful for a swift recovery. The next expected development will likely come from Morikawa’s team regarding his status for future tournaments.
