Kyle Shanahan nearly lost eye in car crash, says friend Chris Simms
Coach Shanahan’s recovery and training camp presence
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a serious car accident on July 14, an incident that resulted in significant injuries, according to his long-time friend Chris Simms. The 49ers publicly disclosed the accident on July 25, coinciding with the start of training camp. Simms, who was informed by Shanahan’s wife, Mandy, shared details of the coach’s condition.
Simms recounted receiving pictures from Mandy Shanahan shortly after the crash, which revealed the extent of the injuries. These included broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken left hand, 40 stitches in his face, and a concussion. Simms noted the initial appearance of the injuries was “jarring,” with some cuts still open, and highlighted the severity by stating Shanahan was close to losing his right eye.
The coach has been present at the 49ers’ training camp, albeit in a limited capacity as he continues to recover from the concussion. On one occasion, he observed practice for approximately 30 minutes. Quarterback Brock Purdy noted that Shanahan has been leading team meetings and discussing situational football, but his usual active role on the field has been curtailed.
Impact on the team and player adjustments
The absence of Shanahan’s direct involvement during practice has prompted adjustments within the team. Purdy, who typically interacts extensively with Shanahan, has had to adapt to the coach’s reduced presence. The role of calling plays to the quarterback during practice has been taken over by offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster is managing the team in Shanahan’s stead, supported by co-ordinators Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.
Purdy described the initial news of the accident as a “scary moment,” expressing concern for Shanahan’s well-being. He confirmed reaching out to Shanahan and receiving a response, which reassured him about the coach’s condition. Purdy also mentioned a brief hug with Shanahan on the field during a recent practice session. During one practice, Shanahan watched alongside general manager John Lynch for the final 45 minutes and had to avoid an errant pass from Purdy.
Simms indicated that Shanahan initially expected the concussion effects to subside quickly but realized after several days that he was not functioning optimally. The lingering effects of the concussion have been a significant part of his recovery process. The incident also made Shanahan reflect on the fragility of life and the potential for a much worse outcome.
The team is also managing other injuries during training camp. Rookie defensive lineman Romello Height was carted off the field due to cramps. Other players not practicing included swing tackle Vederian Lowe, who is expected to miss a portion of training camp with a high ankle sprain, receiver Christian Kirk with a calf strain, rookie defensive lineman Gracen Halton with a bruised knee bone, and defensive lineman Andrew Farmer with a back injury. Cornerback Nate Hobbs, however, returned to practice after missing the initial session.

Shanahan is expected to participate in training camp on a limited basis until he is fully cleared from his concussion.
