Gilbert Rozon has been ordered to pay $880,000 to eight women in a civil trial for sexual assault and misconduct, with Judge Chantal Tremblay affirming their claims.

“With one exception, each of them has demonstrated overwhelmingly that she suffered one or more sexual assaults at the hands of Mr. Rozon,” stated Judge Chantal Tremblay, delivering a significant verdict in the civil trial against Gilbert Rozon. The court has ordered Rozon to pay $880,000 to eight women who accused him of sexual assault and misconduct.

The trial, which spanned ten months, saw the plaintiffs seeking a total of $14 million in damages. Judge Tremblay noted that all but one of the plaintiffs met the burden of proof required to substantiate their claims. This ruling comes after a lengthy legal battle that began as a class-action lawsuit but transitioned into individual suits following a 2020 Quebec Court of Appeal ruling.

Rozon, who denied the allegations and claimed to have had consensual relations with three of the women, faced a complex legal landscape. He countersued four of the women for defamation, but this claim was rejected by the judge. The incidents in question occurred between 1980 and 2004, highlighting a troubling history of alleged misconduct.

Among the plaintiffs, Annick Charette’s complaint was particularly notable, as it led to criminal charges against Rozon, though he was ultimately found not guilty. Charette was awarded $95,000 in damages as part of the civil trial’s outcome.

Martine Roy, one of the plaintiffs, expressed gratitude for the support of her fellow survivors, saying, “Today, I honour the brave women who have spoken up, thank you for your courage and solidarity.” Annick Charette also emphasized the challenges faced by victims, stating, “Few victims have the means to pursue a civil process, and few perpetrators have the means to compensate those same victims.”

Rozon, who stepped down from his role at Just For Laughs in 2017 following the allegations, has faced significant scrutiny throughout this process. The civil trial’s conclusion marks a pivotal moment for the plaintiffs, as they seek acknowledgment and justice for their experiences.

The ruling not only addresses the financial claims of the plaintiffs but also serves as a broader statement on the importance of accountability for personal integrity violations. Judge Tremblay remarked, “This judgment therefore aims to bring this long trial to a close and to reaffirm that an infringement of personal integrity, when proven, calls for a legal response proportionate to the extent of the harm suffered.”

As the community reflects on this verdict, the implications for Rozon and the broader conversation surrounding sexual misconduct continue to unfold.
