A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three deaths and left around 150 passengers stranded off the coast of Cape Verde. The outbreak is linked to a rodent-borne illness that has raised alarms among public health officials.
Three passengers have died, including a 70-year-old Dutch man and a 69-year-old Dutch woman. A British man is in critical condition after being evacuated to South Africa. In addition, at least three other individuals on board have fallen ill, and two crew members are also showing symptoms of the disease.
The ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was on a polar cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Antarctica when the outbreak occurred. The situation escalated quickly, prompting authorities to refuse the ship permission to dock in Cape Verde as a precautionary measure.
