A recent incident at the Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus in Québec has prompted HIV testing for approximately 40 patients due to a surgical instrument that was improperly disinfected since 2017.
Health officials discovered that a specialized screwdriver, used in surgeries, had not been adequately sterilized. This oversight has raised alarms about patient safety and the effectiveness of current sterilization protocols.
Jean-Thomas Grantham, a representative from CHU de Québec-Université Laval, explained, “On s’est rendu compte récemment qu’un tournevis très très spécialisé avait une partie qui était démontable au niveau du manche.” This revelation has caused significant concern among those affected.
The hospital has reached out to neurology patients who underwent surgeries over the past nine years, advising them to undergo blood tests for potential exposure to HIV. Grantham reassured the public, stating, “On ne prend pas de chance, on a appelé les patients et on leur a prescrit un dépistage sanguin.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, infectiologists have assessed the risk of contamination as low. However, the anxiety it creates is palpable among those who received the notification.
Grantham expressed empathy for the patients involved: “On est vraiment désolés de l’anxiété que ça peut créer, mais on veut être sûrs et certains que tout le monde est en sécurité.” This sentiment underscores the hospital’s commitment to patient welfare amid this distressing circumstance.
