Instagram DMs Outage Causes Major Disruptions for Users
On March 10, Instagram users faced major disruptions, primarily unable to access direct messages (DMs). This incident created a communication blackout for many, affecting personal and business interactions.
Over 10,000 access complaints were logged on Downdetector, peaking in the early morning hours. Of these complaints, 71% were related to access issues, while 19% pertained to server problems, and 5% involved feed glitches.
As of 10:03 PM EST on March 10, over 6,000 users reported problems on Downdetector. The breakdown of complaints showed that 68% involved app disruptions, 19% were related to server connection issues, and 7% concerned posting troubles.
The outage notably affected major cities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York. Users reported being unable to send or receive DMs, which highlighted the platform’s role in facilitating communication.
Many turned to alternative platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger during the outage, indicating a significant reliance on Instagram for messaging. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Around two hours ago, my message page didn’t show any messages at all, even though I have plenty, and I got two notifications earlier.”
Another user tweeted, “Instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN,” while yet another lamented, “Are Instagram DMs down or… am I cooked?” Such sentiments reflect the widespread impact of the outage.
Instagram has not yet provided detailed information about the cause of the outage, which began during the evening hours on March 10. Details remain unconfirmed.
This outage underscores the dependency of users on private messaging for both business negotiations and personal relationships. The situation also raises questions about the resilience of Meta’s infrastructure.
As children average over 30 minutes daily on Instagram, the implications of such outages could affect their concentration and social interactions, particularly for users aged 10-14.
As the situation develops, users are left awaiting clarity on the cause and assurance of improved reliability for Instagram DMs in the future.
