James Chiu, co-founder of the Mandarin restaurant chain, passed away at 78, leaving behind a legacy of community service and innovation.

James Chiu, a beloved figure in the hospitality industry, passed away on April 29, 2026, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of community service and restaurant innovation.

Chiu was not just the president and co-founder of the Mandarin restaurant chain but also a devoted champion of people and community. His family described him as someone who “lived with positivity and gratitude until his peaceful passing.”

Originally from Taiwan, Chiu emigrated to Montreal in 1963. After studying business at Concordia University, he launched his first restaurant, Sweet ‘N Sour. In 1979, he and his family purchased a small Chinese restaurant in Brampton called Mandarin.

Under his leadership, Mandarin expanded to the buffet concept in the 1980s. Today, the chain boasts 29 locations across Ontario and employs more than 3,000 people.

Chiu’s contributions went beyond just food; he was recognized for his community service work, including scholarships for hospitality students. He received prestigious awards such as the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal Award and a lifetime achievement award from the City of Brampton.

The Mandarin restaurant group expressed their sorrow saying, “We have lost a true restaurant icon and a passionate champion of people and community.” They added that Chiu leaves an indelible mark on the hospitality industry.

Chiu is survived by his wife, three children, and seven grandchildren. His family has created a website to honor his legacy.

As friends and colleagues remember him fondly, they reflect on over 40 years of community contributions. Michael He shared that being around Chiu made life feel less difficult: “He was always full of positivity.”
