Jamie Bacon has been released from prison after serving his sentence for his role in the notorious Surrey Six massacre. He was sentenced to 18 years for conspiracy to commit murder but had time served in pre-trial custody that reduced his total time to just over 12 years.
The 35-year-old is currently living in Edmonton, Alberta, under a court-ordered curfew and monitoring by local police. This release comes after a high-profile trial where Bacon was described as the mastermind behind the 2007 murders of six individuals in Surrey’s Balmoral Towers.
Bacon initially faced first-degree murder charges but ultimately pleaded guilty to conspiracy. His involvement in the crime shocked many, particularly because two innocent bystanders were among those killed that fateful night.
Six other individuals have also been convicted for their roles in the Surrey Six killings, including Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston. Haevischer is still appealing his conviction, while Johnston sadly passed away from cancer in 2022.
Eileen Mohan, whose son was one of the victims, expressed her outrage at Bacon’s release: “This person was the mastermind; he should have been in prison for the longest time.” She added, “There has to come up to a point that we need to make a stand and say this person should not be released because of all the crimes that he has committed.”
Despite being monitored closely by Alberta Provincial Corrections and local police—who confirmed they will keep an eye on him—many community members remain uneasy about his presence.
In 2024, Bacon was denied statutory release after completing two-thirds of his sentence due to concerns about his criminal entrenchment. As of now, he is out on a peace bond following the completion of his entire sentence period.
The spirit of the law says that every individual deserves protection; however, for many affected by the Surrey Six tragedy, this protection feels compromised with Bacon’s return to society.
