Mbappe and Haaland Lead Their Nations

Two prominent forwards in international football, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, are set to meet on Friday as France takes on Norway in a World Cup Group I decider. Both nations have secured qualification for the knockout stages after winning their initial two group-stage matches, with their star strikers playing pivotal roles. Mbappe and Haaland have each scored four goals in the tournament, each netting twice in their first two appearances.

The upcoming match, scheduled for Foxborough, outside Boston, will determine the top spot in Group I. Finishing first would theoretically provide a more favourable path in the knockout bracket. France currently holds a slight advantage due to a superior goal difference, meaning a draw would secure them first place in the group.

Impact on National Teams

The importance of both Mbappe and Haaland to their respective national teams is particularly evident on the international stage. Since August 2022, France has won 69.8% of its matches when Mbappe is part of the squad, a figure that drops to 50% without him. During this period, France has also averaged 2.3 goals per game with Mbappe, compared to 1.9 goals without him.

For Norway, Haaland’s influence is even more pronounced given the team’s comparatively limited depth. Since August 2022, Norway has won 64.5% of matches with Haaland in the team, a significant decrease from the 33.3% win rate without him. Haaland has also demonstrated remarkable recent form for Norway, scoring in 12 consecutive competitive international matches, including 16 goals in his last six appearances.

Mbappe, France’s all-time leading goalscorer, has 60 international goals in 100 games. Haaland, despite playing fewer matches, has international goals for his country. Both players have shown their ability to perform under pressure in major tournaments.

Player Styles and Contribution

The playing styles of Mbappe and Haaland offer different contributions to their teams. Their heat maps from the tournament indicate distinct areas of activity on the pitch. In terms of attacking metrics for their clubs this season, Mbappe has outperformed Haaland in shots, touches, and chances created.

A notable difference is in their dribbling numbers during this World Cup; Mbappe has attempted 14 dribbles across the first two matches, while Haaland has attempted only one. However, Haaland has demonstrated a superior chance conversion rate over the past four club seasons in league matches, converting 23.43% of his shots compared to Mbappe’s 18.24%.

Mbappe’s defensive contribution has been lower, ranking 1,481st out of 1,483 players who played a minimum of 900 minutes for combined defensive contributions in the top five leagues this season. Both players have similar goal involvement percentages for their countries since August 2022; Mbappe has been involved in 44% of France’s goals (33 goals, 17 assists), while Haaland has contributed to 43.9% of Norway’s goal involvements (39 goals, four assists).

Path to Knockout Stages

France, considered among the favourites to win the tournament, aims to avoid a slip-up in the group stage. Finishing second could lead to a more challenging path in the knockout rounds, potentially including a last-32 clash with Ivory Coast, followed by a possible encounter with Brazil in the last 16, and England in the quarter-finals.

Norway, despite Haaland’s impactful presence, is not widely considered a title contender. France’s preparations for the game have been affected by the temporary departure of manager Didier Deschamps, with assistant coach Guy Stephan taking charge until Deschamps returns.
