Mission Fire Breaks Out at Senior Care Home

“Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated,” said a representative from the Mission RCMP as a significant fire engulfed the Chartwell Carrington House on March 9, 2026.

The fire erupted around 6 p.m. on 7th Avenue near Cedar Valley Connector, leading to a swift response from the Mission Fire Rescue Service and multiple firefighting units. Flames and smoke were visible rising from the building, prompting immediate evacuation procedures for the residents.

In response to the emergency, a Reception Centre was established at the nearby Mission Leisure Centre to assist evacuees. Emergency Support Services were also on the scene to provide necessary aid.

As the situation unfolded, 7th Avenue was closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street to facilitate the emergency response. Firefighters conducted a thorough search of the third floor of the building and reported it clear shortly after 7:07 p.m.

At 7:15 p.m., a confinement crew continued to battle the blaze, which had fully engulfed the structure. The Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was paged for mutual aid, highlighting the scale of the incident.

“Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources are on scene and actively responding,” stated the City of Mission, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

As the fire raged, nurses from the retirement home arrived with three carloads of blankets at 7:22 p.m., showcasing the community’s support for those affected.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any injuries, as officials continue to assess the situation. The priority remains on ensuring the safety of all residents and staff involved.

“Additional updates will be provided as they become available,” the authorities noted, indicating that more information will be shared as the incident develops.

Residents and bystanders are advised, “If you do not need to be in the vicinity, choose an alternate route and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles,” to ensure that emergency responders can operate without hindrance.
