“This year we did nothing,” shared Leila, a resident of West Vancouver, reflecting the sentiment of many as Nowruz approaches on March 20, 2026. The Persian New Year, celebrated for over 3,000 years, typically brings families together for nearly two weeks of visits, meals, and gatherings. However, this year, the mood is markedly different.
As economic hardships and political turmoil weigh heavily on the community, many are struggling to embrace the traditions that define Nowruz. Kamran, another community member, expressed, “Planting Sabzeh is something we Iranians do every year, but this year with all the news about war we completely forgot about it.” Sabzeh, symbolizing renewal and rebirth, is a key element on the Haft-Seen table, which features seven symbolic items starting with the Persian letter ‘S.’
Nowruz, marking the first day of spring and the beginning of the Persian calendar year, is a time of hope and renewal. Yet, this year, many find it difficult to celebrate amidst the backdrop of uncertainty. Soheil Vosta, a local leader, noted, “This year is kind of special for us,” hinting at the resilience of the community despite the challenges.
Historically, Nowruz has been a beacon of light, representing ancient Persian customs centered on renewal and the arrival of spring. The Nowruz Fire Festival, a tradition symbolizing good health and luck for the coming year, is often a highlight, but this year, it may be overshadowed by the prevailing concerns.
As families prepare their Haft-Seen tables, the spirit of Khaneh Tekaani, or deep spring cleaning, is still present, even if the enthusiasm is muted. This tradition, meaning ‘shaking the house,’ is meant to refresh the home and spirit, but many are feeling the weight of their circumstances.
Despite the challenges, Soheil Vosta offered a glimmer of hope, stating, “After darkness, light always comes.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the community, reminding everyone that even in tough times, the essence of Nowruz—renewal and hope—remains alive.
As the date approaches, many are left wondering how they will celebrate. Details remain unconfirmed regarding community events, but the spirit of togetherness and resilience is expected to shine through, even in the face of adversity.
