Serena Williams falls to Maya Joint in 1st singles match in nearly 4 years

Serena Williams' Wimbledon singles comeback ends in a first-round loss to Maya Joint. This marked Williams' first singles match in nearly four years.

Serena Williams‘ return to singles competition at Wimbledon concluded in the first round, as she was defeated by Maya Joint of Australia. The match, which took place on Tuesday, marked Williams’ first singles appearance in nearly four years, following her participation in the 2022 US Open.

Joint, a 20-year-old Australian, secured the victory in three sets with scores of 6-3, 6-7, and 6-3. This match was Joint’s third main draw appearance at Wimbledon.

Williams’ Return to the Court

Williams, a six-time Wimbledon champion, had not competed in singles since her third-round loss at the 2022 US Open. Her return to competitive tennis began earlier this month as a wild-card doubles entry at the Queen’s Club Championships. Partnering with Vicky Mboko from Burlington, Ontario, Williams made her first court appearance in 1,375 days. The duo reached the quarterfinals of the tournament before being forced to retire due to a knee injury sustained by Mboko. This injury prevented Mboko, a 19-year-old and former World No. 9, from participating in Wimbledon.

The highly anticipated singles match against Joint was played under the lights on Centre Court, beginning around 7:30 p.m. local time. The atmosphere was described as having the tension of a final, rather than a first-round encounter, reflecting the significance of Williams’ return.

Williams, who turned professional in 1995, has won 23 Grand Slam titles, placing her second in history behind Margaret Court. Her presence at the All England Club and her announcement of a return had generated considerable attention within the sport.

Match Dynamics and Performance

Despite the eventual loss, Williams demonstrated moments of her renowned skill and mentality. She faced a challenging situation, trailing by a set and a break, and later faced a match point in the second-set tiebreak. However, she managed to win the second set, prompting a loud reaction from the Centre Court crowd.

Joint, ranked World No. 87, showcased composure and self-confidence throughout the match. She had previously lost 11 tour-level matches dating back to January. Williams’ movement in the early stages of the match appeared tentative, particularly on the grass surface, after her extended break from singles play. However, her serve, a key component of her past successes, seemed to retain much of its power. She held her first service game to love and delivered serves at 123 mph and 121 mph.

Joint managed to fend off early break points despite some initial nerves. She secured the first break of the match to take a 5-3 lead in the first set, which she ultimately won in 36 minutes. In the second set, Joint broke Williams early to lead 3-1. Williams, who was 0-5 on break points at one stage, created opportunities but struggled to convert them.

Williams broke back to level the second set at 3-3, executing a volley and a forehand winner that drew a strong response from the crowd. However, Joint broke back immediately in the next game. Williams then broke again for 4-4. The second set tiebreak saw both players display intensity. Williams saved a match point at 6-5 with a clutch serve and went on to win the set, forcing a decider.

In the final set, Williams broke to lead 2-1. However, the effort of the preceding hours appeared to affect her, and Joint broke twice to establish a 5-2 lead. Williams served to stay in the match and succeeded, but Joint eventually converted her third match point, despite a double fault on her second.

Looking Ahead

Williams has not yet commented on her singles plans following her Wimbledon appearance. Her next scheduled match is a doubles event with her sister, Venus Williams. The sisters have won six doubles titles together at Wimbledon.

The match was attended by Williams’ daughters, Olympia and Adira, which Williams had cited as a significant motivation for her comeback. While the outcome was not a victory, her return to the court at 44 years old, after a four-year absence from singles, marked another chapter in her career.

Joint, who was also born in Michigan, displayed notable resilience throughout the match, particularly after being reminded by Ajla Tomljanović, the player who defeated Williams in her last singles match four years prior, that even the most accomplished athletes experience nerves.

The match concluded with Joint securing the victory in the third set.
