Canada’s Roster for Summer Showcase
The 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase is set to begin in Windsor, Ontario, featuring teams from Canada, the United States, Finland, and Sweden. The event, running from July 26 to August 1 at the WFCU Centre, serves as an initial evaluation for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Among the 32 players participating for Canada are Carson Carels and Keaton Verhoeff, both top-10 selections in the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft. Carels, chosen by the Calgary Flames with the No. 6 pick, contributed one assist in five games at the 2026 WJC, where Canada secured a bronze medal. The 18-year-old defenseman recorded 73 points, including 20 goals and 53 assists, in 58 games last season with the Western Hockey League. He is slated to play for the University of North Dakota this season.
Verhoeff, selected No. 9 by the San Jose Sharks, had four assists in five games at the 2026 WJC. The 18-year-old defenseman also registered 20 points, with six goals and 14 assists, in 36 games at North Dakota last season.
These two are among eight players from Canada’s 2026 WJC roster attending the camp. Other returning players include goalie Jack Ivankovic (Nashville Predators), defenseman Cameron Reid (Predators), and forwards Braeden Cootes (Vancouver Canucks), Caleb Desnoyers (Utah Mammoth), Brady Martin (Predators), and Cole Reschny (Calgary Flames).
Key Prospects and International Participants
The Summer Showcase will also feature seven Canadian players selected in the first round of the 2026 draft. Joining Carels and Verhoeff are forwards Caleb Malhotra (Canucks, No. 3), Tynan Lawrence (St. Louis Blues, No. 11), and Ethan Belchetz (Utah Mammoth, No. 17), as well as defensemen Daxon Rudolph (Buffalo Sabres, No. 4) and Ryan Lin (Sharks, No. 21).
Dimian Zhilkin, a 17-year-old right wing and projected first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, is also attending. He recorded 75 points, comprising 36 goals and 39 assists, in 59 games with Saginaw of the Ontario Hockey League last season.
Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, is eligible for the 2027 WJC but was not invited to the camp. He finished second among all players at the 2026 WJC with 14 points, including four goals and 10 assists, in seven games. He also scored one goal in five games at the 2025 WJC.
Finland has also announced its roster, which includes Samu Alalauri (Chicago Blackhawks, No. 66) and goalie Juuso Ainasto (Maple Leafs, No. 85), both selected in the first three rounds of the 2026 draft. Sweden and the United States, the winner of the 2026 WJC, have also released their rosters for the showcase.
Preparations for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship
Alan Millar, general manager of the Canada national junior team, stated that the showcase is an important opportunity to evaluate talent against international competition and build team identity. Misha Donskov, who served as an assistant coach for the 2026 WJC team, will coach Canada.
The 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, from December 26, 2026, to January 5, 2027. Canada will compete in Group A alongside Czechia, Latvia, Norway, and Switzerland, with preliminary-round games scheduled for Rogers Place in Edmonton.
Group B will feature Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden, and the United States, with their preliminary-round games taking place at the Marchant Crane Centrium in Red Deer. Canada aims to win the WJC for the first time since 2023, following a third-place finish in 2026 and consecutive fifth-place finishes prior to that.
