The Cut Line and Player Challenges
The cut line for the weekend is anticipated to be around +1, meaning only the top 70 players and ties will advance. Several prominent golfers, including Rory McIlroy (+2), Matt Fitzpatrick (+2), Jordan Spieth (+3), and Justin Rose (+5), are currently outside this projected cut line and will need strong performances to secure their spots for the weekend.
The course conditions, particularly the wind, can significantly impact scoring. Players like Wallace have capitalized on relatively calmer conditions in the morning. The use of technology, such as the USGA TS3 smart ball, helps course staff maintain consistent green conditions despite the hot and dry weather.
Padraig Harrington, a two-time Open champion, is facing an uphill battle after an 80 in the first round and is currently at +10, making it unlikely he will make the cut. Despite the challenge, he demonstrated resilience with a birdie on the second hole after a bogey on the first.
The second round also features afternoon tee times for players such as Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, and Jon Rahm.
