What Happened
Toronto General Hospital (TGH) has been ranked as the second-best hospital in the world by Newsweek magazine, rising from its previous position of third. This marks the first time TGH has achieved this ranking, making it the top universally accessible hospital globally, second only to Mayo Clinic in the United States. TGH remains the #1 hospital in Canada and is the only Canadian hospital to be included in the top 10 of the world rankings for eight consecutive years.
Why It Matters
This recognition underscores the excellence and innovation present within the University Health Network (UHN), which encompasses TGH. The ranking reflects the collective efforts of UHN’s specialized programs, including the Sprott Department of Surgery, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, and Ajmera Transplant Centre. Julie Quenneville, CEO of UHN Foundation, emphasized that this honor is a testament to the dedication of the staff and the vital support from the community, particularly through philanthropy, which fuels research and innovation.
What’s Next
As TGH continues to lead in global healthcare, the focus will remain on sustaining its world-class status through ongoing donor support and innovation in patient care. UHN’s Toronto Western Hospital also made strides, ranking #7 in Canada, while Princess Margaret Cancer Centre retained its position as Canada’s leading oncology hospital. The integrated approach of UHN aims to enhance health outcomes and maintain its reputation as a leader in academic health sciences.
