The Thrifty Foods Victoria Day Parade has achieved remarkable recognition at the Canadian Event Awards, showcasing community spirit and creativity.

The Thrifty Foods Victoria Day Parade in Victoria, Canada, recently won the prestigious Event of the Year at the 2026 Canadian Event Awards. This recognition is especially significant considering the parade operated on an annual budget of $160,000, far less than some competing events that boast budgets as high as $250,000.

The Greater Victoria Festival Society organizes this cherished community event. The 2026 parade will introduce a new downtown route and features a shortened length of just 1.6 kilometers, down from four kilometers in previous years. Organizers expect around 75 entries this year, a decrease from 98 entries in 2025.

Kelly Kurta, a member of the organizing team, shared her emotional reaction: “I just cried” when they learned about the award. This sentiment reflects the dedication and hard work that goes into making the parade a highlight for many local residents.

This year’s celebration coincides with the 85th anniversary of the Keremeos Rodeo, another beloved community event. The rodeo parade is set to start at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 18, marking an exciting day for families and friends gathering to celebrate.

As part of ensuring safety during these festivities, the UFVRD RCMP will enhance their police presence around popular areas throughout the Victoria Day long weekend. Cst. Hannah Sutton emphasized that police encourage everyone to enjoy the region’s picturesque landscapes safely, responsibly, and respectfully.

The Victoria Day long weekend traditionally marks the beginning of a busy summer season filled with community events across British Columbia. With both the Victoria Day Parade and Keremeos Rodeo taking center stage this year, local residents can look forward to celebrating their rich heritage and vibrant community spirit.
