“Canada’s Unions: We Build, We Care, We Fight”—this rallying cry will echo through the halls of the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg from May 11 to 15, 2026. The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) will host its 31st Constitutional Convention, bringing together thousands of union delegates to tackle pressing worker issues amid economic uncertainty.
The convention is expected to represent the voices of more than three million workers across Canada. This gathering comes at a crucial time when many are facing challenges related to job security and affordability. With rising costs affecting public services and daily life, union leaders aim to unite their collective strength for change.
In Winnipeg, the local community feels the impact of these broader issues. Recently, firefighters from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to seven fires in just over 24 hours, showcasing their dedication and readiness. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in these incidents.
The urgency of public service responses has never been more apparent. For instance, fire crews managed to control a grass fire that spanned about 1,000 square metres. This swift action underscores the importance of community safety and the need for robust support systems.
Meanwhile, as summer approaches, residents are reminded about the importance of submitting regular water meter readings. Gilbert Fillion, Superintendent of Meters for the City of Winnipeg, emphasized this necessity: “It’s important to submit regular water meter readings. This helps us bill more accurately.” Such practical concerns highlight how local governance intersects with larger labour movements.
The upcoming convention not only seeks to address immediate worker concerns but also celebrates a milestone—Canada’s unions are marking 70 years of collective strength. This history enriches the discussions expected at the convention.
With five days dedicated to dialogue and strategizing for future challenges, attendees will focus on protecting good jobs and advocating for affordable living conditions. As preparations ramp up for this significant event, community members eagerly anticipate how these discussions will shape their future.
