Zayne Parekh, viewed as a potential savior for the Calgary Flames upon being drafted ninth overall in 2024, has had a tumultuous journey this season. Just before the season began, excitement surrounded his selection, especially after an impressive draft-eligible season where he scored 33 goals and amassed 96 points with the Saginaw Spirit.
As the 2024-25 season unfolded, Parekh continued to showcase his talent, netting another 33 goals and 107 points with the Spirit. However, his transition to the NHL with the Flames has not been as smooth. In his first 23 games with the Flames, he recorded only two assists, raising concerns about his performance.
In November, Parekh faced a setback with an injury that sidelined him for a significant period. He made his return in February, but the impact of the injury was evident. Currently, he has played 27 professional games this season, including 22 with the Flames, averaging around 16 minutes of ice time per game.
Despite his struggles, Parekh did find some success at the 2026 World Junior Championships, scoring five goals and eight assists for 13 points in just seven games. This performance highlighted his potential, even as he faced challenges in the NHL.
As of now, Parekh has a minus-4 rating over his 26 appearances this season, and all of his points have come on the power play, including a notable power-play goal against the Kings. Observers have noted that while he is still able to show his skills, he has yet to fully translate them to the NHL level.
Experts have expressed concern about his development, with one stating, “This season as a whole has felt like a waste in what is supposed to be a big development year for Parekh.” Another remarked, “You can’t be a complete one-trick pony at the NHL, especially when the numbers aren’t piling up.”
As the season progresses, the Flames and their fans are hopeful that Parekh can overcome these challenges and develop into the player they envisioned. He will be AHL eligible for the 2026-27 season, which may provide him with additional opportunities to refine his skills.
