bell roaming data cap changes — CA news
Bell Canada has updated its roaming data caps and hotspot restrictions, affecting how customers use their unlimited data plans.

Bell Canada has made significant changes to its telecom offerings by introducing new roaming data caps and hotspot restrictions across its plans. The updated $80/month ‘Max’ plan now features unlimited 5G data, replacing the previous cap of 175GB.

Under the new structure, customers roaming in the U.S. and Mexico will face a daily limit of 5GB. Once they hit that threshold, speeds drop to 512Kbps. This may come as a surprise to many users who expect seamless connectivity while traveling.

Key features of Bell’s updated plans:

  • The Max plan includes 50GB per month of high-speed hotspot data, after which speeds are also throttled to 512Kbps.
  • The $95/month ‘Ultra’ plan offers unlimited data at speeds up to 2Gbps, but it too has a daily roaming cap of 5GB across 65 countries.
  • Both plans have a monthly hotspot limit of 50GB.

Interestingly, while Bell promotes these unlimited data plans, they are tightening how and where users can utilize them at full speed. The average Canadian uses under 10GB of data per month, making these new limits feel particularly restrictive for those who travel frequently.

Carriers like Freedom Mobile offer lower-priced plans with decent data allowances, which might appeal to budget-conscious consumers. Bell’s five-year price guarantee applies only to the base plan price before taxes, raising questions about affordability for many families.

The actual base price for the Ultra plan is closer to $115/month due to various discounts, which could deter potential customers who might not see the value in these higher-tier options.

As users adjust to these changes, it remains unclear how they will impact customer satisfaction and retention. Many are left wondering if the promise of unlimited data is worth the tighter restrictions on usage.
