Blackhawks GM Davidson on Kane: ‘He knows our door is always open’
Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson confirmed on Tuesday his interest in bringing back franchise veteran Patrick Kane this summer. Davidson stated on OverDrive on TSN 1050 Toronto that Kane has been training at the team’s facilities and is aware of the team’s stance on a potential reunion. Kane, an unrestricted free agent at 37 years old, has a long-standing relationship with the organization, according to Davidson.
Davidson emphasized that Kane has achieved significant milestones in hockey, inspiring young players with his accomplishments. He noted that Kane has earned the right to take his time in making a decision about his future. Davidson added that Kane is frequently seen training at the Blackhawks’ practice facility during the off-season. The general manager affirmed that while they await Kane’s decision, the team’s door remains open for him. Davidson described Kane as a “Blackhawk at heart for life,” even if he is not currently wearing their jersey, expressing reverence, respect, and love for the player.
Kane’s legacy and potential return
Kane played a pivotal role in ending the Blackhawks’ 47-year Stanley Cup drought in 2010, subsequently winning two more titles in 2013 and 2015. During the 2013 victory, he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy. His career with the Blackhawks saw him achieve significant records, placing second in assists with 779 and points with 1,225. He also ranks third in all-time games played with 1,161 and goals with 446 for the team.
In the 2015-16 season, Kane received the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award after recording 46 goals and 106 points in 82 games. He also earned the Calder Trophy in 2008 as the Rookie of the Year. Last season, Kane played 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings, accumulating 16 goals and 57 points while on a one-year contract. Across his career, split between the Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and Red Wings, Kane has amassed 508 goals and 1,400 points in 1,369 career games. In January, he became the all-time American-born leading scorer in NHL history, surpassing Dallas Stars legend Mike Modano.
Bedard’s desire for a reunion
Connor Bedard, the Blackhawks’ star winger and 2023 first overall pick, has openly supported the idea of Kane returning to the team. Bedard, who signed a new five-year contract, expressed his excitement about the possibility of playing alongside Kane. He mentioned that he couldn’t imagine the reaction Kane would receive upon his return to the United Center with the Blackhawks, and the boost it would provide to both the team and the fans.
Bedard stated that playing with and learning from Kane would be an incredible experience. He hopes Kane decides to come back, believing it would significantly improve the team. While Kane may not be in his prime, he still contributed 41 assists and 57 points in 67 games with the Red Wings last season, demonstrating his continued effectiveness. The Blackhawks currently have $14.3 million in salary cap space, which could allow them to offer Kane a substantial contract.
Other potential destinations for Kane include the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. Kane is from the Western New York area and has spent time training in Toronto. The Sabres have $5.1 million in cap space, which could accommodate a deal for Kane. However, a return to Chicago is seen by some as a fitting conclusion to Kane’s career. In a prominent role, Kane could provide secondary scoring and mentor young players like Bedard. The decision ultimately rests with Kane, who seeks to end his career on his own terms.
Davidson reiterated that the organization will await Kane’s decision, emphasizing that Kane is aware the door is always open.
