Air India is making a significant move to enhance passenger comfort by investing over $400 million in refreshing the interiors of its Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft. This ambitious project aims to modernize the airline’s fleet, with the first reconfigured Boeing 777-300ER expected to enter service in early 2027.
The reconfiguration will retain the first-class cabin on Air India’s Boeing 777s, ensuring that premium travelers continue to enjoy a luxurious flying experience. By October 2028, all 13 Boeing 777-300ERs are planned to be reconfigured, marking a significant upgrade for the airline’s long-haul fleet.
In addition to the Boeing 777 updates, Air India is also introducing a new premium economy product across its long-haul fleet. The first retrofitted Boeing 787-8 is expected to enter service by May 1, 2026, featuring a total of 250 seats in its new configuration, which includes 20 business class seats, 25 premium economy seats, and 205 economy seats.
Air India has been actively leasing additional aircraft to support its operations, including six former Delta Air Lines Boeing 777-200LRs and six former Etihad Airways Boeing 777-300ERs. This strategic move not only expands their fleet but also allows for a smoother transition as they implement these upgrades.
Historically, Air India has undergone significant changes since its privatization by the Tata Group in late 2021. This investment in fleet modernization is part of a broader strategy to enhance service quality and compete more effectively in the global aviation market.
Meanwhile, Air France continues to operate Boeing 777-300ER on its route from Detroit to Paris, with a business class configuration of 2-3-2. The flight from Detroit to Paris lasts approximately 7 hours and 2 minutes, showcasing the efficiency and comfort of the Boeing 777 in long-haul travel.
As Air India embarks on this extensive retrofit project, details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline for completion, which may be affected by ongoing supply chain issues. Observers are keenly watching how these developments will enhance the travel experience for passengers and position Air India in the competitive aviation landscape.
