Air Canada is suspending multiple flights and increasing fees as soaring fuel costs reshape travel plans amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict. Jet fuel prices have doubled since the start of the Iran conflict, leading to significant changes in airline operations.
Before this spike in fuel costs, airlines expected steady growth in travel demand. Many had planned to expand routes and improve services. However, the current situation has forced them to reassess.
As a direct result of rising expenses, Air Canada has announced several flight suspensions for summer 2026. This includes routes from Toronto and Montreal to JFK International Airport, as well as a suspension of the Algiers to Montreal route until 2027.
The impact on travelers is palpable. Ticket prices have surged, with some fares increasing by $50 to $100. Additionally, Air Canada has raised checked baggage fees for certain fare types effective April 13, 2026.
At Regina Airport, the situation is equally challenging. The Regina Airport Authority is balancing its growth ambitions against rising operational costs and uncertain travel demand. CEO James Bogusz stated, “Profitability for airlines is of critical importance to maintain these routes.”
The airport has reported an $800,000 loss, yet it generated an EBITDA of $9 million last year. Bogusz emphasized the need for continued support from the provincial government regarding minimum revenue guarantees for U.S. flights.
As airlines navigate these challenges, they must find ways to keep flying while managing costs effectively. Bogusz remarked, “We’re going to keep delivering value to the airlines to encourage them to fly.”
The future remains uncertain as both airlines and airports adapt to these rising fuel costs. With many routes under threat, local economies that rely on air travel may face difficulties in sustaining growth.
Overall, the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict continues to cast a long shadow over the aviation industry. As jet fuel prices remain high, travelers can expect further adjustments in their travel plans.
