calgary weather snow — CA news
Calgary was hit by a heavy wet snowstorm on Thursday, leading to significant snowfall and numerous accidents on city streets.

The numbers

Calgary experienced a heavy wet snowstorm on Thursday morning, with Environment and Climate Change Canada issuing a special weather statement that forecasted up to 20 centimetres of snow. The storm has already caused significant disruptions, with Calgary police reporting at least 163 crashes on city streets between midnight and noon, resulting in 22 injuries.

As the storm progressed, a snowfall warning had been issued for Calgary, predicting between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow. By the afternoon, the situation worsened, with police reporting a total of 229 crashes from midnight to 4 p.m., including 23 injuries. The sheer volume of accidents highlights the challenges drivers faced as the snow accumulated rapidly.

Chris McGeachy from Environment and Climate Change Canada noted, “(It’s) no surprise. March and April are high accumulation months, whether it is snow or rain.” This historical context serves as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant during these transitional months when winter weather can still impact daily life.

In light of the storm, McGeachy also urged caution, stating, “We just want to remind people: leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go, plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front.” This advice is especially pertinent given the number of accidents reported.

The storm system is expected to move out of the Calgary area around dinnertime on Thursday, bringing a brief respite from the heavy snowfall. However, temperatures are projected to rise, with Calgary expecting around 8 C on Friday and 5 C on Saturday, likely causing the snow to melt quickly.

Looking ahead, flurries are forecasted again for Sunday, with the potential for additional snowfall. Kevin Stanfield remarked, “One snow event down, a couple more to go perhaps, and they start again this weekend.” This indicates that while the immediate storm may be passing, winter weather is not yet finished with Calgary.

As residents navigate the aftermath of the storm, Chris McGeachy reminded everyone, “Calendar might say April; unfortunately, winter’s still here for a couple more days.” With the unpredictability of spring weather in Calgary, it is essential for the community to stay informed and prepared for the conditions ahead.
