Scheduled to kick off construction in July 2026, the project aims to add approximately 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity. This expansion will include new pipeline segments, additional compression, and upgrades to existing facilities along the Westcoast natural gas pipeline system, which spans 2,900 kilometers from northeast British Columbia to the U.S. border.
According to Premier David Eby of British Columbia, “Approval of the Sunrise natural gas expansion project is good news for British Columbian jobs.” The project is expected to generate over $3 billion for Canada’s economy and create around 2,500 construction jobs—many of which will be filled by local workers and Indigenous groups.
Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, emphasized the project’s benefits: “This project will enable us to heat more homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools while bolstering British Columbian industry, including for LNG.” Such developments are crucial as Canada looks to secure its energy future.
Moreover, this initiative is projected to generate more than $700 million in federal and provincial tax revenue. As Greg Ebel, Enbridge’s CEO and President, remarked: “The multi-billion dollar Sunrise Expansion Program is a shovel-ready, critical natural gas infrastructure project that supports the advancement of Canada’s energy superpower ambitions.”
