Research Developments
Concordia University has recently published a study focusing on the relational fractures experienced by vegans in an omnivorous society. Prior to this research, the complexities of veganism were often overlooked, with many assuming that dietary choices did not significantly impact social interactions.
The study identified three distinct types of relational fractures: co-performance, co-learning, and marketplace. Co-performance fractures arise when vegans introduce new elements to shared practices, such as family meals. This often leads to tension as omnivorous family members may struggle to accommodate these dietary changes.
Co-learning fractures occur within the vegan community itself, particularly when new vegans seek guidance from more experienced individuals. Many participants expressed personal struggles that sometimes discouraged them from maintaining a vegan lifestyle, as noted by researcher Aya Aboelenien.
Marketplace fractures highlight the challenges vegans face in finding suitable dining options, which can further isolate them in social settings. Zeynep Arsel emphasized the importance of understanding these fractures from a vegan perspective, given the predominance of omnivorous diets in society.
Sports Achievements
In a contrasting development, Concordia University’s women’s hockey team recently clinched the RSEQ championship by defeating the Université de Montréal Carabins 2-1. This victory marks a significant turnaround for the Stingers, who had not won the title in five years.
The championship game saw a tense first 40 minutes, with the first goal finally scored after a lengthy wait. The Stingers’ head coach, Julie Chu, celebrated her sixth RSEQ Coach of the Year award, showcasing her effective leadership throughout the season.
With this championship win, the Stingers have now secured three titles in the last five years, positioning them favorably for the upcoming U Sports national championship, which begins on March 19. Player Ekaterina Pelowich remarked on the importance of enjoying the moment while remaining focused on future practices.
These developments at Concordia University reflect a broader trend of growth and achievement, both in academic research and athletic performance. As the university continues to navigate these contrasting realms, the impact on students and the community is likely to be profound.
