The BJP won 115 out of 120 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation during the Gujarat local body elections held on April 26, 2026. This marks a significant shift in the political landscape, as the Indian National Congress made a surprising return after being completely wiped out in the previous elections.
Just five years ago, Congress did not win a single seat in Surat. Their absence left many residents feeling disenchanted with their political options. The overwhelming dominance of the BJP seemed unshakeable. Yet, this recent election has rekindled hope for some voters who longed for more diverse representation.
In stark contrast to Congress’s resurgence, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced major setbacks. They only managed to secure four seats in Surat, a disappointing outcome for a party that aimed to expand its influence in Gujarat. Manoj Sorathia, AAP’s state general secretary, lost his bid in Ward No. 4, highlighting the challenges they face moving forward.
The results of the election were clear:
- BJP secured an impressive 115 seats out of 120.
- Congress returned to win 5 seats, marking their first success in over a decade.
- AAP won just 4 seats, down from expectations.
The BJP also dominated across Gujarat, winning all 15 municipal corporations where elections were held. In Ahmedabad, they secured 160 out of 192 seats, further solidifying their power base.
Political analysts see these results as reflective of changing voter sentiments. Arshad Jariwala, a local political expert, noted, “Voters are seeking alternatives to traditional parties. The Congress’s comeback suggests there is room for change—something many people are craving.” This sentiment resonates with those who felt overlooked by the ruling party.
The road ahead will be crucial for all parties involved. For Congress, this victory could signal a new beginning and an opportunity to rebuild trust with constituents. Meanwhile, AAP will need to reassess its strategy if it hopes to make any significant gains in future elections.
