Kerri Einarson’s team won their fifth straight game at the women’s world championship with a 9-6 victory over Italy, maintaining an unbeaten record in the tournament. This win solidifies their position as the only unbeaten team at the World Women’s Curling Championship currently taking place in Calgary, Canada.
In a match against Denmark’s Madeleine Dupont, Einarson’s team showcased their skill, scoring three crucial points in the 10th end to secure a 9-6 victory. The team, which includes Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard, and Karlee Burgess, is based at Manitoba’s Gimli Curling Club.
The competition format allows the top six teams at the conclusion of pool play to advance to the playoffs, with the top two earning direct entry into the semifinals. Einarson’s team improved to a 4-0 record before facing Denmark and is now 5-0, leading ahead of Switzerland, Japan, and Turkey, all of whom hold a 4-1 record.
During their match against Italy, Einarson’s team executed a remarkable four-point eighth end, which was pivotal in taking control of the game. Einarson remarked on the quality of the competition, stating, “Yeah, I knew it was going to be a great game. We’ve played them before, and I know this is a new lineup, but they played phenomenal.”
She also emphasized the importance of challenging matches, saying, “It’s good to have games that test you and make you make those clutch shots when you need them. And we did that when we needed them.”
The team will face a demanding schedule, playing morning and evening draws for three consecutive days starting Tuesday. Einarson noted, “This schedule is a grind,” highlighting the physical and mental challenges ahead.
As the tournament progresses, observers expect Einarson’s team to continue performing strongly, especially given their current momentum. They are seeking their first world title and a third consecutive championship for Canada, following Rachel Homan’s back-to-back victories in previous years.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the final standings and playoff matchups as the tournament continues.
