Mexico oust Ecuador for 1st World Cup knockout win in 40 years
Historic Victory for Mexico
Mexico has advanced to the Round of 16 in the World Cup, marking an end to a 40-year drought in the knockout stages. The team secured a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in a match held in Mexico City. This win is particularly significant for Mexican fans, who have witnessed their team exit at this stage on seven previous occasions.
The goals came in quick succession during the first half, with Julián Quiñones scoring in the 22nd minute and Raúl Jiménez adding another in the 31st minute. This performance allowed Mexico to progress past the knockout stage for the first time since the 1986 tournament, when they defeated Bulgaria while hosting the event.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre, who was a starting midfielder in the 1986 team, expressed his satisfaction with the result. He noted the strong connection developing with the fans and described the team as being like a family. Aguirre had previously served as an assistant in 1994 and as head coach in 2002 and 2010, periods during which Mexico did not advance past this stage.
Key Performances and Team Momentum
Julián Quiñones, playing in his first World Cup with Mexico, scored his third goal of the tournament. He is now the second-highest scorer for El Tri in World Cup history, trailing only Luis “Matador” Hernández and Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, both of whom have four goals each. Quiñones, who became a naturalized citizen in 2023 after arriving in the country from Colombia at age 17, has been a crucial element in Mexico’s attack.
Raúl Jiménez contributed his second goal of the tournament, bringing his total for the national team to 47. This places him five goals away from tying “Chicharito” Hernández as Mexico’s all-time leading scorer. The team’s recent success extends an unbeaten run to 12 games, following a friendly loss against Paraguay in November.
This victory also marks a notable achievement for Mexico as the first CONCACAF side to eliminate a CONMEBOL team in a World Cup knockout match. South American teams had won the previous five encounters between the confederations at this stage.
Match Delays and Upcoming Fixture
The match against Ecuador experienced a delay of one hour from its original scheduled time due to a thunderstorm in Mexico City. The kickoff, initially set for 7 p.m. local time at the Estadio Azteca, was pushed back as officials waited for lightning strikes to clear the area, adhering to safety protocols established by local authorities. Fans remained in their seats during the delay.
This was the second match in the tournament to be affected by weather, following a two-hour, 11-minute suspension during the France–Iraq game in Philadelphia on June 22, also due to a storm. Despite the delay, the atmosphere remained positive among the spectators.
Looking ahead, Mexico will play another home match on Sunday against the winner of Wednesday’s game between England and Congo. The Estadio Azteca continues to be a strong venue for the Mexican squad, which boasts an undefeated record across 10 World Cup matches played there.
