Mission Fire Breaks Out
“Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated,” stated the Mission RCMP as a significant fire engulfed the Chartwell Carrington House on March 9, 2026.
The fire erupted around 6 p.m. on 7th Avenue near Cedar Valley Connector, prompting immediate action from the Mission Fire Rescue Service and other emergency resources. Flames and smoke were visible rising from the building, leading to a swift evacuation of residents.
A Reception Centre has been established at the nearby Mission Leisure Centre to assist those displaced by the fire. Emergency Support Services are on scene to provide necessary aid to evacuees.
As firefighters battled the structure fire, they conducted a thorough search of the third floor, reporting it clear by 7:07 p.m. However, the building was fully engulfed in flames, necessitating the deployment of multiple firefighters and engines.
By 7:15 p.m., a confinement crew continued to combat the blaze, while Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was paged for mutual aid. The situation has led to the closure of 7th Avenue in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street.
“Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources are on scene and actively responding,” the City of Mission reported, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
As the fire response continues, nurses from the area contributed by delivering three car loads of blankets to assist evacuees at the Reception Centre at 7:22 p.m.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any injuries, as officials continue to assess the situation and ensure the safety of all residents.
“Additional updates will be provided as they become available,” a spokesperson noted, indicating that the community is awaiting further information on the incident.
Residents and passersby are advised, “If you do not need to be in the vicinity, choose an alternate route and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles,” as the response efforts remain ongoing.
