“Pretty scary,” shared student Ahmar Khan, reflecting on the tense atmosphere at Mount Royal University in Calgary following a recent incident that prompted a shelter-in-place order. The order was issued around 2:45 p.m. after reports surfaced of an individual carrying a weapon on campus.
As students and staff were advised to remain indoors, the Calgary Police Service swiftly responded to the situation. The lockdown was lifted around 5 p.m., but not before the community experienced a wave of anxiety and uncertainty.
Insp. Darren Smith of the Calgary Police explained, “The lockdown was issued once we were able to confirm through CCTV, working with Mount Royal security, that there was in fact someone that walked on campus with a knife.” This confirmation was crucial in ensuring the safety of everyone on campus.
Authorities later identified the individual involved as a staff member working as a chef for the university. It was revealed that the man was carrying what appeared to be a chef’s knife while on his way to work, a detail that has sparked conversations about the appropriateness of carrying such items in public areas.
Insp. Smith emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “We take these threats very seriously. People need to use common sense when they’re carrying a weapon into … a public area.” Fortunately, police confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to public safety during the incident, alleviating some concerns among the university community.
