What Happened
Pink Shirt Day, celebrated annually in February, is set to take place in 2026 with the theme “Sprinkle Kindness.” This initiative aims to remind individuals of the power of kindness in combating bullying. The day was originally founded in Berwick, Nova Scotia, in 2007 when two high school students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, took a stand against bullying after witnessing a younger student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
Why It Matters
Bullying remains a significant issue in Canada, affecting one in five children. Recent statistics indicate that 71% of youth aged 12 to 17 have experienced bullying in the past year, with nearly half reporting repeated incidents. Pink Shirt Day serves as a crucial reminder that kindness must be intentional and ongoing, especially in the face of such alarming rates of bullying among young people.
What’s Next
As Pink Shirt Day 2026 approaches, schools, offices, and social media platforms across Canada will see an increase in individuals wearing pink to show solidarity against bullying. The movement continues to grow, with over 110 countries participating in Pink Shirt Day events last year. For those affected by bullying, resources such as the Kids Help Phone are available for support.
