Gasoline prices in Îles-de-la-Madeleine have surpassed $2 per liter, driven by geopolitical tensions. The average price in the region is also rising.

What is driving the recent surge in gasoline prices in Îles-de-la-Madeleine? As of March 17, 2026, the price of regular gasoline has exceeded $2 per liter, reaching approximately $2.02 per liter at local gas stations. This increase is part of a broader trend affecting fuel prices across the region, with the average price of gasoline in the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine area reported at $1.80 per liter.

In addition to the rising gasoline prices, diesel has also seen a significant increase, now priced at $2.69 per liter. The retail margin for gas stations in Îles-de-la-Madeleine stands at 17 cents per liter, a stark contrast to the less than 4 cents margin observed in the broader Quebec region.

The spike in fuel prices has drawn sharp reactions from residents. One local, identified as a Madelinot, expressed frustration, stating, “C’est complètement ridicule, pis c’est à cause des États-Unis.” Another resident, Hugo Bourgeois, remarked, “Ça a monté, c’est effrayant,” highlighting the alarming pace of the price increases.

Ryan Cyr, a gas station operator, noted the rapid changes in pricing, saying, “Ça a bougé super vite,” while also clarifying, “Je peux te confirmer que je ne me mets pas 17 cents le litre dans les poches,” indicating that the margins are not benefiting local businesses as one might assume.

The increase in gasoline prices is largely attributed to geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing Israeli-American conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which have disrupted global oil supplies.

In nearby Victoriaville, gasoline prices have also risen, with a recent increase of 10 cents bringing the average price to $1.799 per liter. The average price in the MRCs of L’Érable, Bécancour, and Nicolet-Yamaska is currently $1.749 per liter.

As these price increases continue to impact residents and businesses alike, the situation remains fluid. Further developments in global oil markets and local responses to these price changes will be closely monitored.
