Health Risks Prompt Cheese Recall
“La consommation de produits contaminés est susceptible d’entraîner des diarrhées parfois sanglantes, des douleurs abdominales et des vomissements,” health officials have warned as they announce a recall of several popular cheeses in France due to risks of Listeria and E. coli contamination.
The recall, which began on March 9, 2026, specifically includes a batch of Cantal AOP Entre-Deux cheese, found to be contaminated with Escherichia coli. This cheese was sold in Grand Frais and Fresh stores across the country.
Symptoms of E. coli infection can manifest as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting, with 5-8% of cases potentially leading to severe renal complications. The recall for Cantal AOP Entre-Deux is set to end on March 21, 2026.
In addition to the Cantal cheese, a batch of TOMME NEANT cheese has also been recalled due to possible contamination with Salmonella spp. This cheese was sold in bulk starting February 14, 2026, and the recall will remain in effect until March 29, 2026.
Salmonella is a significant concern in France, with nearly 198,000 cases of salmonellosis reported annually. “Cette bactérie reste l’une des causes les plus fréquentes de troubles liés à l’alimentation,” officials noted, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness.
Health authorities recommend that consumers destroy and refrain from consuming any contaminated cheese products. “Il est conseillé de détruire et ne plus consommer les fromages du lot contaminé,” they stated, highlighting the necessity of precautionary measures to protect public health.
As the situation develops, consumers are urged to stay informed about food safety recalls and to monitor the products they purchase. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further actions that may be taken in response to this recall.
