A rare May snowstorm is set to blanket parts of Quebec on May 4, 2026, defying expectations for the spring equinox. Residents in areas like Montreal, Saguenay, and Gaspésie are preparing for an unexpected winter-like weather system.
The forecast predicts up to 15 centimeters of snow in northern and eastern regions, while Montreal has already received nearly 10 centimeters during the day. This unusual storm comes after several centimeters of snow fell over the weekend in southwestern Quebec.
“Ça va commencer en neige dans la région de Montréal et aller jusqu’à Québec, au Saguenay, au Bas-Saint-Laurent et en Gaspésie,” said Kathleen Maynard from Environment Canada. She emphasized that this weather system is part of a larger pattern affecting the region.
Despite the calendar marking spring, many are experiencing a continuation of winter conditions. Ski resorts across Quebec are benefiting from this late-season snowfall. Josée Cusson noted, “Avec ce qui est tombé en fin de semaine, on a reçu 25 centimètres [en Estrie]!” highlighting how the ski season has been extended.
The winter season typically concludes around Easter in Quebec. However, this unexpected snowstorm has created a buzz among locals and ski enthusiasts alike. “C’est encore l’hiver!” exclaimed one resident, reflecting the surprise many feel about this late-season weather.
Officials continue to monitor the storm’s progression and its impact across various regions. The situation remains fluid as communities prepare for more snowfall in the coming days.
