Durzi’s Transition to New York

Pettersson’s statistics from the past season, including his 43.76 percent expected goals-for rate and 38.22 percent actual goals-for rate, were career lows. He recorded 18 points, with three goals and 15 assists. Despite the team’s struggles, Pettersson viewed his time in Vancouver positively, noting the leadership experience he gained. He is under contract for five more seasons at a $5.5 million average annual value.
Potential Defensive Pairing
There is a strong possibility that Durzi and Pettersson will form a defensive pairing for the Rangers. Chris Drury mentioned that the trades were made with the hope of finding two defensemen with chemistry. Durzi confirmed he has spoken with Pettersson and expressed excitement about the potential pairing, praising Pettersson as a “special guy.”
Pettersson also believes he and Durzi are a strong match, highlighting Durzi’s skating, puck-moving ability, and offensive skills, as well as his competitive edge. His zone entries per 60 minutes at five-on-five, at 10.54, led all Utah defensemen. His passed zone exits per 60, at 2.496, would have ranked second among New York defensemen behind Adam Fox. Pettersson’s reunion with Mike Sullivan is a significant factor, as he thrived under Sullivan’s system in Pittsburgh, never finishing with an expected goals-for rate under 52.26 percent.
The Rangers also brought back Braden Schneider on a one-year, $5.5 million contract extension, and he is expected to serve a role in the team’s third pairing. The team also selected defenseman Alberts Šmits with the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The additions of Durzi and Pettersson provide flexibility, allowing the team not to rush Šmits’ development. All indications suggest a Durzi-Pettersson defensive duo will open training camp, with the potential to play together throughout the 2026-27 campaign.
