What Happened
Suzy Eddie Izzard has unveiled a new solo adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, in which she portrays 23 characters, including the iconic roles of Hamlet, Ophelia, and Gertrude. This innovative rendition condenses the original four-hour play to approximately two hours and 20 minutes, making it more accessible to contemporary audiences.
Why It Matters
Izzard, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, has been a vocal advocate for gender expression since coming out as transgender in 1985. Her unique perspective as a gender-fluid individual allows her to challenge traditional gender roles within Shakespeare’s work. In an interview, she questioned the necessity of rigid gender binaries, stating, “Do we have to have this crowbarring separation?” This adaptation aims to enrich the female characters, Ophelia and Gertrude, who have historically been underdeveloped in the original text. Izzard expressed her dissatisfaction with their portrayals, saying, “If Shakespeare was around, I’d say, ‘Will, William, Bill, you underwrote Ophelia and Gertrude. More meat on the bone, please.’”
What’s Next
With the collaboration of her brother Mark and director Selina Cadell, Izzard’s adaptation is set to tour globally, bringing her fresh interpretation of Hamlet to audiences worldwide. This project not only honors the legacy of Shakespeare but also highlights the importance of gender representation in the arts.
