The completion of the Bella Coola Centennial Pool in 2025 marks a significant step forward for this small community. With over 2,100 residents, the pool serves as a vital hub for water safety training and seasonal programs. Graham Pirie, who oversaw the project, noted, “The old pool was in very poor condition.” Built in 1967, it had deteriorated significantly after heavy rainfall events.
The new facility is not just a replacement; it’s an upgrade. Made of prefabricated stainless steel, it offers modern amenities that were sorely lacking in its predecessor. Construction was completed one month ahead of schedule—showing the commitment to enhancing local infrastructure.
But there’s more on the horizon for Bella Coola. The Embleton Community Centre is set to include an eight-lane competitive lap pool and a leisure/teaching pool. This ambitious project received $64 million in federal funding from the Government of Canada’s Build Communities Strong Fund. Patrick Brown remarked, “The state-of-the-art recreational and community facility will serve residents of all ages for generations.”
In total, the city council has approved $148 million in municipal funding for the Embleton Community Centre, which will span 175,000 square feet upon its expected completion in late 2028. Such investments are crucial for a community that values health and wellness.
This new wave of development reflects a broader commitment to improving quality of life in Bella Coola. Residents are already looking forward to utilizing these facilities for fitness and social gatherings.
Yet, challenges remain. As Graham Pirie noted during construction discussions, “We knew logistics were going to be a challenge.” Ensuring that both projects meet timelines and budgets will require ongoing attention from local leaders.
As these facilities take shape, they promise not only to enhance recreational opportunities but also to foster community spirit. The Bella Coola Centennial Pool stands as a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together to invest in their future.
