“I wanted to take people on a journey that embeds them within this community, like they were a fly on the wall,” said Geeta Gandbhir, director of the documentary ‘The Perfect Neighbor,’ which recounts the tragic events surrounding the death of Ajike ‘AJ’ Owens. The film utilizes police body camera footage and interviews to provide a detailed narrative of the circumstances leading to Owens’ death.
On June 2, 2023, Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four, was shot and killed by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz. The incident occurred when Lorincz fired a .380-caliber handgun through Owens’ locked front door. This act of violence shocked the local community in Ocala, Florida, where Owens was known for her warmth, generosity, and spirit.
Prior to the shooting, Lorincz had a history of harassing children in the neighborhood, often using racial slurs. This background adds a layer of complexity to the tragic event, as it raises questions about community dynamics and the safety of residents. Following the incident, Owens’ children were left in the care of their grandmother, Pamela Dias, who expressed the profound impact of the loss on their family.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Lorincz was convicted of manslaughter on August 16, 2024, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison in November 2024. This legal outcome has been a source of mixed feelings within the community, as many grapple with the implications of such violence in their neighborhood.
“My heart is a little lighter, and we’re now on the path of true healing,” Pamela Dias stated, reflecting on the family’s journey following the tragedy. The establishment of the Standing in the Gap Fund, aimed at supporting families impacted by racial violence, was a direct response to the events surrounding Owens’ death, starting with her family. This initiative seeks to foster healing and support in a community that has been deeply affected.
The documentary ‘The Perfect Neighbor’ runs for 90 minutes and includes a poignant moment featuring a short clip of AJ Owens, capturing her spirit and the love she had for her children. The film serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community solidarity in the face of violence.
As the community continues to heal, the narrative surrounding AJ Owens’ life and tragic death remains a powerful testament to the need for compassion and understanding among neighbors. “There wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t do for those near and dear to her heart,” Pamela Dias remarked, emphasizing the legacy of love that AJ leaves behind.
Looking ahead, the community is left to reflect on the lessons learned from this tragedy, with many hoping for a future where such violence is no longer a reality. The story of AJ Owens serves as a stark reminder that love can be louder than hate, a sentiment echoed by her mother, who believes that her daughter’s story can inspire change.
