Tibet Commemorates 67th National Uprising Day
On March 10, 2026, Tibet commemorated the 67th Tibetan National Uprising Day in Dharamshala, where an international delegation of dignitaries participated in a press conference expressing solidarity with the Tibetan people.
Michael Brand, a prominent figure in the delegation, emphasized the need to raise global awareness about the threats to Tibetan culture and language, stating, “Never give up, the time will come.” This sentiment echoed throughout the event as attendees sought to highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Tibetans under Chinese rule.
During the press conference, Jiří Oberfalzer remarked that China’s actions in Tibet constitute multiple crimes, while Hans-Gert Pöttering stressed the importance of self-determination for the Tibetan people. Juris Vilums drew parallels between the Tibetan struggle and that of Ukraine, further illustrating the global implications of the situation.
Peaceful demonstrations were held worldwide, with around 100 members of Tibet Support Groups from 32 countries participating in various events to raise awareness. The Tibetan National Uprising has been commemorated every year since March 10, 1959, following the uprising against Chinese control.
Reports indicate that approximately 86,000 Tibetans were killed during the 1959 uprising, and the Chinese government has faced accusations of erasing Tibetan identity through education policies. Currently, around one million Tibetan children are reportedly separated from their families and educated in state-run boarding schools, raising concerns about the preservation of Tibetan culture.
In a related event, the 39th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert took place at Carnegie Hall on March 3, 2026, featuring performances by Robert De Niro, Elvis Costello, and Jesse Malin, who stated, “This is a crazy time, so it’s good to be here with so many people whose hearts are in the right places.”
Sophie Richardson highlighted the urgency of the situation, saying, “The first is Beijing’s efforts to erase a distinct Tibetan identity.” As the world reflects on the significance of the Tibetan National Uprising Day, the call for solidarity and support for the Tibetan cause remains strong.
